Mukkadal Dam is the main source of drinking water for the people of Nagercoil Corporation.
The water available from the #Mukkadal Dam is brought to the drinking water treatment plant located at #Krishnancoil in Nagercoil and treated and distributed to the public.
The drinking water treatment plant at Krishnancoil was built and inaugurated by the King of Travancore on June 20, 1945 to purify the water from the Mukkadal Dam to the people of Nagercoil.
The Krishnancoil treatment plant treats 200 lakh liters of water daily and supplies it to the people of Nagercoil.
Currently, drinking water is distributed to 6 – 8 wards per day on a daily basis.
When it was built in 1945, it was built to supply 70 lakh liters of water per day (7MILLIONLITERE) per day, according to the Nagercoil Municipal Census, to supply drinking water.
Following this, in 1961, Nagercoil started supplying drinking water from here to the areas to be incorporated in the municipality.
Thus began the daily supply of water to the people, and in view of this, at a ceremony held at Nagercoil on July 7, 1979, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Mr. MGR, inaugurated the second STATION treatment plant under the Nagercoil Municipal Drinking Water Development Distribution Scheme.
The second station purifies and supplies 85 lakh liters of water daily (8.5MILLIONLITRE).
Then in 2001 the then #TamilNadu government (17MILLIONLITRE) built a third treatment plant with a capacity of 170 lakh liters.
Through the above three treatment plants, 200 lakh liters of water is being treated daily and supplied to the people of Nagercoil.
The Puthen Dam Joint Drinking Water Project is currently underway in Nagercoil under the Drinking Water Development Project
Steps have been taken to bring the available water to the treatment plant at Krishnancoil and distribute it.
According to it, a fourth treatment plant is currently being constructed there to treat 410 lakh litres of water ( 41.12 million litre ).
School and college students are allowed to view the operations of the refinery at Krishnancoil.
Corporation officials explain the activities of the station to the students who have obtained the appropriate permission to make an industrial visit.
The public is not allowed to visit.
